Given the manner in which the internet and the World Wide Web have invaded our lives over the past many years, it is hardly surprising that music or rather the radio would be one of the areas being dominated by the internet. Internet radio has, over the past few years since its inception, become very popular, especially amongst those who are constantly working and need to relax while on the job. Similar to the traditional radio, online radio delivers the same kind of music and other shows, albeit over the web. Additionally, what is interesting is the development of internet talk radio, which allows you to listen to various popular chat shows online.

Since its inception in 1891, the radio has been a popular tool of communication with streamlining online radio being introduced sometime in the year 1993 by Carl Malamud. This new invention has been a boon to many people across the world, especially those who love to listen to music from all over the world. With internet radio, not only can you listen to good music or chat shows but can do so from any part of the world. In other words, if you are in England, you can still listen to popular US radio shows online with the help of internet radio. Moreover, if talk shows interest you then you can also listen to your favorite talk shows online through the internet talk radio. Incidentally, Carl Malamud’s first transmission was a live talk show, which was initially available only to local listeners but with the help of the internet radio was transmitted globally, which incidentally started the entire arena of talk radio stations online.

Given the fact that the software for listening to online radio is easily available, sometimes even free of cost, most teenagers as well as adults download it to listen to their favorite music while at work or at leisure. A study revealed that nearly 15% of teenagers as well as adults were regular listeners of online radio, often proclaiming it to be their favorite past time or stress buster. Additionally given the fact that there are many radio stations available online, chances of getting bored are next to minimum and therefore they have become very popular among the youth of today.

All good things come with their disadvantages and the biggest disadvantage or drawback of an online radio station is that you need a computer and internet connection, if you want to listen to such music or chat shows. In other words, without a good internet connection and proper computer and software, you will not be able to listen to such online radio stations. Secondly, the amount of bandwidth used by internet radio is huge, which could affect the speed of other activities that you indulge in online. However, if you have a good computer and high speed internet connection, then you need not worry about these two aspects and can enjoy the benefits of listening to an online talk radio or internet radio.

Radio is not only for good music but also for good and stimulating conversation and if you are on the lookout for one, then you should definitely try and tune into an internet talk radio, where chat shows dominate. Internet talk radio is very similar to the traditional one, where there is a host who interviews another and there is audience participation, the only difference being that the internet talk radio is transmitted via the internet and can be accessed globally.

Lastly, advertising through such radio stations brings about a great amount of revenue as the internet radio is one of the best advertising solutions for all. People can use audio as well as video advertisements to showcase their company, products or services over a talk show or music transmitted via the online radio. The best part of these advertisements is that most talk radio stations allow you to customize your ads such that they increase your visibility and profitability.

Sometimes alarm clock radios break down. However, we can take the time to repair them ourselves. The following is what to do to repair them.

1. Check the power at the outlet, and make sure the power is on.

2. Check the pointer. Some household radios use a station frequency pointer mounted on a dial cord that is moved by a small wheel on the side of the clock radio. Other household radios use a digital frequency readout that cannot be adjusted.

3. If the sound is fuzzy, disassemble the unit and locate the volume control. Spray electrical contact cleaner into the control and rotate or slide the control several times to lubricate the mechanism.

4. Replace a damaged or broken antenna.

Most modern clock radios are built on printed circuit boards that can only be repaired by trained technicians. Some of the tools you may need are screwdrivers, wrenches, electronic control cleaner, denatural alcohol, soldering iron and solder.

Reset Dial Pointer

1. Turn on radio. Find a strong radio signal, listen to the frequency.

2. Use a piece of tape or grease pencil to mark the dial where the pointer should be for that frequency.

3. Unplug the receiver and open the housing. There are usually two to four screws in the underside of the radio.

4. Inspect the pointer mechanism for problems, such as a cord that came off at the end rollers, or a break in the cord. Replace the broken cord or repair it.

5. Loosen the spring clips Move the pointer along the dial cord until the station being received lines up with the tape or mark on the dial.

6.Tighten the clips on the cord. Make sure you do not move the pointer.

7. Plug the radio in and verify that the dial pointer reads correctly.

Replacing External Antenna

1. Loosen the antenna screw.

2. If there is no exterior screw, open the radio and access the antenna base.

Replacing an Internal Antenna

1. Unplug the receiver and open the housing.

2. Find and remove the internal antenna, of the internal base of the external antenna.

3. Inspect the wires wound around the antenna for serious damage. Make sure the antenna is firmly plugged into the main circuit board. If the antenna is damaged, replace it or attempt to repair the antenna, or replace the radio as a unit.

Clean Electronic Components

1. Unplug the receiver and open the housing.

2. Use canned air to blow dust from components, including any power cords and speaker jacks.

3. Use electrical contact cleaner, or a cotton swab dipped in dentured alcohol to clean electronic components.

4. If you find broken components on a circuit board, replace the circuit board. Before purchasing a circuit board, you can use a soldering iron and electronic solder to attempt a repair.

Now you have repaired the clock radio yourself.

From the early days of satellite radio, companies like Dish Network have offered digital audio channels as part of their programs. The breakthrough in popularity of satellite radio, however, happened just recently, when the technology became more permissive. Satellite radio was very rare on moving locations, such as boats or cars, mostly because there was the need for some expensive equipment – a tracking dish. This was a strong deterrent which kept satellite radio quite unknown by the general public. Today, however, one can receive digital audio satellite broadcasts by using a small, GPS-like antenna. This greatly increased the feasibility of the satellite radio systems and more and more vehicle owners began considering satellite radios as a good source of music and news.

The birth of satellite radio in the United States

When the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated a spectrum in the “S” band (2.3 GHz) for the broadcasting of digital radio services in 1992 no one thought the amplitude that the system would take in the future. From the initial Digital Audio Radio Service (DARS) things progressed until two companies were given licenses to broadcast digital radio in 1997. These two were American Mobile Radio (today known as XM Satellite Radio) and CD Radio (presently called Sirius Satellite Radio). The fact that satellite radio is nationwide makes it a very attractive media channel, both for commercial and non-profit organizations. The two companies that initiated the development of satellite radio saw the huge potential it had, since it wasn’t confined by the limitations of other terrestrial broadcasters.

Benefits of using satellite radio

Here are some of the most noteworthy benefits of having a satellite radio system:

- No more geographical limitations – since the radio program is broadcast through a satellite you don’t have to switch radio stations every time you leave a certain coverage area.
- The digital quality of the satellite radio has some amazing benefits on its own. There are no noise disturbances that were traditional to FM and AM broadcasts. The transmission is crystal clear and satellite radio receives some valuable points when broadcasting quality is concerned.
- Analog radio stations simply cannot broadcast the full range of sounds available through digital satellite radio.
- Both XM Radio and Sirius Radio can be picked up on all the US territory and they are also available in some parts of Canada and Mexico.

Satellite radio technology

Each of the major satellite radio services uses its own equipment to broadcast the signal to their clients. Both XM Radio and Sirius Radio provide their clients with different ways of receiving their services.
